Research interests

My long-term line of research has been centred on freshwater fish ecology. I have been particularly interested in studying the influence of habitat on fish life histories, behaviour and physiology, and ultimately in understanding whether habitats have a carrying capacity that limit population abundance.

Due to the ubiquitous impact of global environmental change, and of climate change in particular, on freshwater fish populations, my current line of research has been particularly focused on studying the responses and adaptation capacity of freshwater fish to environmental changes.

My research has a clear applied focus as my ultimate goal is to develop knowledge and tools to support the conservation and management of ecological systems in general, but with a special emphasis on freshwater fish population. To this end, I have integrated a wide range of approaches such as field studies, empirical experiments, statistical models, and above all, simulation models. Thus, ecological modelling is a key dimension of my research.
